I'm ready for my modest photo show. The Native Bagel (It's a great place for lunch!) offers one wall for the Wellsboro Art Club and one wall for the Grand Canyon Photo Club. I have space to hang five 16" by 20" photo composites - which are shown here. The work will be hung during the afternoon on Ground Hog Day.

After working on the photo images collages of my granddaughters, I got the bright idea to use some of my people-free photos to make collages using overlaping and transparencies. Here are some spaced steps that occurred while I made this collage using old ceramic letters (that I have often used in my textured paintings). I was trying to come up with 11 good images for a small photo display to be hung in the Native Bagel eatery in Wellsboro, PA. Yesterday we went over for lunch to see the space - well, the space will hold five large images tops! So in my culling process, this piece was eliminated. Some of the pieces will feature things like eggs, silverware and stoplights. My photos will be hung in February and the photos will be marked with a sign proclaiming: Member of the Grand Canyon Photo Club. (There is good food, too. All soups and sandwiches are served with a bag of homemade "bagel chips.")

I really enjoyed the colorful leaves on the deck and Sophie being her usual busy, busy self. I just had to try to join the many images together into a coherent whole.

A fellow member of the Grand Canyon Photo Club opened a show of 47 large photographs from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. Wolfram Jobst has often explained his thoughts and ideas about photography; but, better yet, he has shared many of his digital images with our photo club, too! Hurry over to the Gmeiner - the show runs through the month of January.

Someone I met at the Athens ARTSfest visited with her two children so that I could get impressions of their hands on the same painting. The kids picked out the things I added to the painting. Intense blues and reds were decided on for the main colors. We decided to make the plaster layer thicker than on my usual pieces - in hopes that it would emphasize the "reality" of the hands that made the prints.

I think a grandmother is going to get the painting for Christmas!

Through the years, I've made about fifty of these Santas. Friends Greg & Sharon asked that I add their dachshund with jolly old St. Nick.

After the primer and the lines, I use my acrylic paints to color Santa.

Sophie was a little apprehensive at first, then she spent some time petting the little fellow.

Thanks to my neice Lexie and her husband Patrick, I've begun a career of map-making! Actually they toured the Mosel River Valley and sampled a few bottles of wine. They saved the lables and came up with the idea of a map with the labels to celebrate their trip.

Much thanks to them - I have a few map ideas now that I must do. Hmmm...

Below is how the piece looked with its first color layer made up of yellow oxide, titanium white and pyrrole orange. (Peach)

Next is the color layer of burnt umber, pyrrole red and a touch of pthalo green to dull the red. (Rose)

The last layer is a mixture of pthalo green and burnt umber. (Green)

On a beautiful fall day, Lana wanted to make her favorite "pupcakes"!

She carefully fixed the cupcake tin with the papers.

She enjoyed the batter three times! Mixing, cleaning the tools and finally eating the finished product.

Now the artistic part! Putting the spinkles into the frosting.

Later came this painting and drawing that Lana did in my cellar studio. She added the sprinkles. too.

Mother Nature has been at work coloring our leaves. Sophie needed to try out her umbrella, too. Lana was busy building a leaf collection.

I've been putting together some jigsaw puzzles to relax between plastering, coloring and framing many new pieces of my art. I save the straight edges and some other pieces to use in some of the new work. Also, I struggled to make some "green" pieces. Hmmmm, still not sure about these two.

The Gallery Room just off the main room of the store. Ruth Anne has corralled many local craftspersons and artist who display their work throughout the store.

Bob Bair's bicycle photo hangs in a prominent place. To the right is a Sassani painting - the artist also has many carvings in the store. Through the doorway is one of Ruth Anne Miller's looms so that she can work during any "slow" time.

The five color stages to complete this project:

First, a thin layer of yellow oxide (watered down) with a bit of burnt umber was spread and manipulated.

Second, a layer of cadmium red with some burnt umber was spread across the entire project with some erasing (wiping away with a clean cloth).

Third, red acrylic paint was applied with a brush in various areas.

Fourth, and last, ivory black was spread across the entire surface and much was removed with a clean cloth.

The logic used here is that the vertical pieces fit between windows and doors - and the horizontals fit over windows and doors. This logic was supplied by Connie Sickler from her famous Settlement House gallery in Sylvania, PA.

The rains this May really slowed our progress. It looks like we had to build the deck over a small pond - correct. There were so many rocks in the clay that we had to dig all the holes for the supporting posts by hand. After we dug enough holes to create a beam, we did the fun part of placing the joists and adding the decking. Four sections are done - two to go!

I had a try at being an artist-in-residence at a local elementary school. The music teacher Helen Feaster, at Liberty Elementary, approached me with the proposal in March. I thought that it was a great idea! Hmmmm - trying to teach my "textured painting" techniques involves a lot of hauling of materials. The students in two 4th grade sections learned how and made their own textured boards over a three day period. We timed things so that the joint compound would have a weekend to dry. But first, I spent a day showing slides and explaining what it was like to spend my life involved in the visual arts. I taught elementary art for 31 years and I've made my textured paintings since 1971. I now work with art student teachers. I told the kids that I'm a lucky man. Here's the first group that listened to my lecture (Mrs. Krotzer's 5th grade). Following are a number of photographs from both Mrs. Ostrom's and Mrs. Alexander's 4th grade classrooms which show the various steps the students went through to get their finished boards.

This etching had the orange color rolled onto the printing plate after the etching was inked. It was made during a summer graduate course a couple years after I graduated from college.

Mansfield University's Art DepARTment holds a Holiday Bazaar in the new Allen Hall

After the Holiday Concert, the crowd visited the new building and was treated to light refreshments and student artwork. Many people roamed the halls to see the new building and the artwork. Pieces of art were for sale in the gallery and vintage old Allen Hall chairs painted with various motifs were offered at silent auction

Just saying. All these pieces are 11" by 14" which is a standard size for store-bought frames. So even though it costs quite a bit more than my self-made frames, it lessens the workload.

I had two choices for colors. The purple and green below was one; the other was pink and orange which I didn't think I could pull off. I'll have to try some small ones around that color scheme.
